Richards(1936:90 引自王文,2007:23)还借用英国诗人雪莱的话说,语言在本质上是隐喻的。

(http://love21cn.msn.com.cn/article/show_article.php?tid=2236559)

(http://blog.sina.com.cn/s/blog_49b54aa201000753.html)

(24)大一女生是樱桃,好看不好吃;大二女生是苹果,既好看又好吃;
大三女生是石榴,好吃不好看;大四女生是番茄,连水果都不是。(大学男生对女生的评价)

(25)女人好比梨,外甜内酸。吃梨的人不知道梨的心是酸的,因为吃到最后就把心扔了,所以男人从来不懂女人的心。(http://bbs.076299.com/forum.php?mod=viewthread&

tid=359475&page=1)

A Royal Robe with Ample Folds:

on the Context Analysis in Translated Text Interpretation

Abstract: Traditional translation studies inevitably falls into the rut of "how to translate". Translation behavior is supposed to be isolated since individual case has been analyzed narrowly and unilaterally only within the angle of contrastive structure linguistics. Such analyses mostly linger on the level of words and sentences, while ignoring concrete communicative, pragmatic and symbolic contexts. The article is trying to proceed from the perspective of context, after analyzing linguistics-oriented and culture-oriented translation theories over various interpretations of context, the effect of cognitive context to target readers will be provided within several case studies. By the introduction of Model of Context, target readers could share the common context, thus reducing the comprehensive "ample folds".

Key words: cognitive context; communication; Model of Context; ample folds

1 Introduction

The relationship between content and language has once been mentioned in the 8th paragraph of Benjamin's the Task of the Translator, while they form a certain unity, like a fruit and its skin (Benjamin, Walter, 2000:19). Now that content and language is in this way naturally complementary, the application of translational decision-making strategies should certainly not sink into such a strange circle as "catch one and lose another". However, in actual translated texts, we find it no hard that content and language used to be separated. Since 1950s, linguistics translation studies has paved the way for the shift of language in terms of translators (任文, 2007:24). For the issue of formal equivalence that source languages deviate from target languages, structure shift, class shift, unit shift and intra-system shift have been provided in the category shift approach, which further builds theoretical basis on the refinement of target languages (卡特福德, 1991). In addition, Schleiermacher's discussion about the issue of domestication also provides evidence for the analysis of language in translation studies. Admittedly, translated texts have witnessed from Cicero's word-for-word translation to Jerome's sense-for-sense translation in the language expression. It is like a piece of clothing, which is a splendid feast for your eyes. In many translation-wanted works, especially to a somewhat narrower side of texts which refer to those practices of literary translation, however, translators are always exposed with double bottlenecks in the level of culture. First, now that translations are considered as a mechanism that with the imitation of "culture A", "language z" is used to express "culture Z" via "language a". Translators themselves should be endowed with relative knowledge of "culture A" (谢天振, 2008:pp.5-10). As for how " language a" is expressed, it refers to the issue of language level. Second, given the fact that translators have experienced the process of "culture Z" via "language a", whether "language a" could be accepted for target readers becomes another problem. Those barriers which are naturally set up are compared to hidden reefs and dangerous shallows, always having translators in a pickle. As a result, it appears the following phenomenon: translators carefully take the beautiful clothing out of the source texts, however, they neglect the intrinsic value that is hidden in original works. It must be "a royal robe with ample folds". Though target readers may read unobstructed or smoothly, they could not understand the inner meaning. Sometimes, they will even get lost during that period. The reason under it should be concluded as translated texts with so many ample folds. As it is known that if poetry translations only take the content without the care of the form, such as rhythms, it can not be "lifelikeness". Qian Zhongshu once said that poetry translations need "sublimation" (陈德彰, 2010:7). In the course of the translation, if only the compact and beautiful language is blindly followed without any interpretation of the text-oriented context, the feeling of source text readers to source texts will be hard to be relatively equal to the feeling of target readers to target texts. Meantime, the confusion ample folds rise up to will invisibly bring down the artistic value in original works.

2 Contextual Relevance

William Wordsworth's famous poem My Heart Leaps Up says "The Child is Father of Man". Such a simple sentence calls for a simple answer if the Chinese version is required, "儿童是大人的父亲". Alert translators may even read through the whole poem, understanding that it is an anthem of the simplicity of the childlike innocence. They hence offer minor alterations about the translation, "童年是成年的父亲" (源引自曹明伦的英汉翻译实践与评析, 2007:87). Any target reader is bound to have difficulty in understanding such a translated text. Why do child and man have to link with each other in terms of filiation, or is there existing any other relationships? To a translator who only starts with the language level, the above translation should have reached the peak of perfection. But if  "acceptability" is taken into consideration, "rewriting" is supposed to be included. However, the problem is proposed, not to discuss the way of translation, but to think over the text manipulation of source text translators. Why does "The Child is Father of Man" have to be stated in this way?

Chinese translation tradition of William Shakesphere's sonnets has lasted for over half a century as various translated texts emerge. The frist sentence of the 116th sonnet states as follows, "Let me not to the marriage of true minds/Admit impediments;...". And available references for translation have been provided as follows (源引自莎士比亚十四行诗集, 1981) :

 (1) 我不承认两颗真心相恋会遭遇阻挠

 (2) 我不承认两颗真心结合会有障碍

 (3) 让我承认,两颗真心的结合是阻止不了的

As for readers in English countries, the verse presents the tension of love and the dynamic of language. In view of the translation effect, target readers often have different puzzles over the verse. Why does the introductory sentence have to be like this in eyes of Shakespeare? Does any one believe the obstacle of the connection with two sincere hearts? Does any one believe that there feels uneasy to be in real love?

Such kind of confusions does not only fall into two examples (here examples only serve as a catalyst, more analyses will be made with more case studies in the following discussion), however, the main issue associated together is contextual relevance. Theoretically, context is defined as a symbolic structure and a collection of meanings which is composed of cultural symbolic systems. In the translation, contextual relevance stands far beyond the surface of language. The translation strategy of "verbal consistency" puts target readers in a comprehensive crisis while contextual relevance analysis begins to draw translators great attention on its corresponding theoretical research.

3 Theoretical Research on Context

The history of foreign translation studies could trace back to ancient Roman times, until 1950s, the research focus of most translators all along centered on "how to translate". Chinese translation studies mostly revolved around literal translation and free translation. The main issue is to discuss the problem as "how to translate" and "how to raise the translation quality". Such notions as "faithfulness, expressiveness, elegance" provide an opportunity for the development of translational multiaspect studies. It is certain that the above two examples to some extent consider the matter of "faithfulness", however, under which rich significance has been carried forward (刘宓庆, 2005:pp.321-322). Hans Vermeer has noted in his Skopos and Commission in Translational Action that fidelity to the source text by itself is not the sole criterion for a good translation. A translated text should be oriented to target culture. It is the target culture that makes the "adequacy" of translation. The theory of Functionalist Skopos Approaches has jumped out of the language-only translation studies for another breakthrough. Now that the target of translators is to make intended readers understand the original texts, then obviously the issue presented on the examples surrounds on readers' comprehension. Initiators and translators have different translation objectives, however, the concern of textual purpose should be related to the consideration of target readers' cognitive context and cognitive competence. Manipulation School holds that the manipulation of texts is a complicated process and translators have to think over the ways in which the original texts could be transferred by the acceptance of target language system. In fact, it involves many factors for the theoretical research, the purpose of which lies in understanding the importance of contextual relevance analysis. Since language has been an integral part of culture, as is well known, barely by the means of "code conversion", any attempt to "trans-coding" one type of language with the end of the other type of language only results in incomprehensible translated texts. The cause for creating a source text often connects with the source culture. Taking the two examples mentioned above for reference, the literal level between the source text and the target text could be impeccable while as for the historical and cultural level, the inaccuracy of translation comes from the transformation of non-essential messages.

1. 1 Linguistics-oriented Research

Translation studies experienced several climaxes, including linguistics-oriented research and translational cultural turn. Among them, many theories could be applied to offer the open-sesame of the above examples. Translation always falls into a set of power relations that cover the context between source text and translated text. For translators, the issue of text decoding entails questions that outstrip the language itself, though any written text is based on its language. Since the year of 1950s, western countries witnessed a group of scholars studying linguistics-oriented translations.

Linguistics relevant theories have put forward the concept of "signifier" and "signified". Saussure holds that "signifier" refers to the pointing finger, the word, the sound-image while "signified" refers to the meaning, the thing indicated by the "signifier" which needs not be a real object but is some referent to the "signifier" refers. If applied into translation studies, "signifier" becomes literal expression of the source text and "signified" could be defined as "implication" behind the literal expression, which is also called context. Actually, the context mentioned here could be endowed with wider range of understanding. Levy once said that wider range of context includes an author's entire book or his/her whole works. Other areas' works and relative cultural backgrounds could also be included.

In the study of linguistic-oriented translation, Nida found that translation is a way of communication. On the premise of no loss in original messages, receptors are being put into the central position. The first phase in Nida's dynamic equivalence development is the concept of formal equivalence (Nida, 1969:12). It asks for both the content and the form equivalence which is quite different with formal correspondence and source text contextual thinking pattern and expression should be reached as much as possible.

French philosopher and Deconstruction School representative J. Jacques Derrida once mentioned the concept of "trace" and "chain of signifier". He thinks that the key for context analysis is to find out the "trace" in the text. As for Shakespeare’s 116th sonnet, the "trace" is "marriage" and "impediments". However, the "chain of signifier" is the process of context analysis. Derrida holds the idea that there is no hors-texte in an article. Because of this, target readers will often get lost. Through the "chain of signifier", the best contextual relevance effect could certainly be reached. In terms of the sonnet, source text readers will associate the "trace" with the marriage ceremony and touch the humanism spirit between the lines. In the western marriage ceremony, the pastor who holds the ceremony will talk to the bride and the bridegroom that "As ye will answer at the dreadful day of judgment when the secrets of all hearts shall be disclosed, that if either of you know any impediment, why ye may not be lawfully joined together in Matrimony, ye do now confess it". The wedding guests will also be informed that " I publish the Banns of Marriage between ... If any of you know any impediment, why these two persons should not be coupled together in holy Matrimony, by God's law, or the laws of this Realm, ye are to declare it, or hereafter for ever hold thy peace" (汪福洋, 2000:pp.56-57). With the contextual relevance analysis, the "trace" "impediments" is no hard to be defined as " impediments of leal marriage", such as bigamy or illegal marriage age. Hence, Shakesphere's words "Admit impediments" is regarded as the answer of the pastor. Translators could adopt the approach of annotation to improve a target text's "adequacy" in a target system. Translators should take enough cognitive costs into translating, thus the "royal robe with ample folds" could be reduced to a fraction and the intrinsic value could highlight itself gradually.

Beyond that, "information structure" in linguistics also offers the motivation when context relevance is analyzed in the interpretation of translated texts. The new information of a clause may become the given information of the next clause in an utterance so as to make a group of clauses cohesive in meaning (何自然, 2006:pp,74-75). In translation, why could we not say that the new information of a clause may become the given information of another article?

1.2 Culture-oriented Research

Western translation studies have entered into cultural turn in an all-round way from late 1980s to early 1990s. One primary trend is the wide application of many cultural theories in the new interpretation of translation. Deconstruction School representative Benjamin has mentioned the matter of audiences. In view of the process of deconstruction, a part of messages loaded in a work can be chips of a broken vase while the translation of source text can be the process of chips being put together. Their shapes may be different, however, they must match with each other exactly. In order to reach the state of identifiable chips, even the means of literal translation could be analyzed in a more deeper way of context. With the context analysis of My Heart Leaps Up, "how to translate" is not the focal point in this article and based on the target readers' comprehension ability, it is related to reduce the "ample folds" as many as possible so as to reach the state of identifiable chips. After all, "faithfulness" of translation to a few specific words or sentences sometimes does not reproduce the real meaning in the source text. Faithful formal copy often ruins "acceptability" of the source text, thus hindering the transformation of the real meaning. Actually, " The Child is Father of Man" originates from Milton's Paradise Regained. It said in the 220th to 221st lines of the 4th volume that "The childhood shows the man, /As morning shows the day" (曹明伦, 2007:90). Now that "Today is the Child of Yesterday" is well accepted in English conventionalized expression, "The Child is Father of Man" comes naturally.

Susan Bassnett and Lefevere together edited Translation/History/Culture: A Sourcebook in which they conducted intensive studies on the translation practice. They believe that the translation study has meet a shift. Formerly, the study was carried out simply by comparing one version of translated text with another version in vacuum environment of formalism (Bassnett, Susan and Andre Lefevere, 1998:3). It has been changed that the source text is being rooted in a network of cultural signs with source languages and target languages.

Cultural translation raises complex technical issues: how to deal with features like dialect and heteroglossia and literary allusion or further-reaching differences in the assumed contextual knowledge that surrounds the text and gives it meaning. With the interpretation of the above examples, we could surely find that cultural translation does not usually denote a particular kind of translation strategy, but rather a perspective on translations that focuses on their emergences and impact as components in the ideology between source text readers and target readers.

4 Model of Context

Now that the concept of contextual relevance has been exposed out of the pure literal correspondence and linguistics-oriented, culture-oriented translation studies have respectively analyzed the context in their own ways of the above examples, however, by which way could a translator be gained the best contextual relevance effect and how does it work actually? Text linguistics holds the idea that the significance of a text is the consultation and result between the author and the receptors. Translators are involved in the process of consultation when they are required to transfer the meaning. The "trace" from the text must be tracked to process the intended meaning, implied meaning and presupposed meaning. With the introduction of context factors, the focus of translation studies starts to get rid of the stereotype of "verbal consistency". In order to tackle target readers' comprehensive difficulties, Hatim and Mason put forward Model of Context which makes the context analysis in the interpretation of translated text more scientific and organized. During the translation process, translators have to reason the source text's cognitive context with the reasonable contextual hypothesis, finding out the best contextual relevance cultural information. Combined with the reader's cognitive context, context analysis should be provided in advance (Hatim, Basil and Ian Mason, 1990:pp.57-58). Since readers have shared the common context, "ample folds" are therefore reduced to reach the best communicative purpose. Model of context takes a text as a dynamic case. It is connected with a bottom-up context analysis, that is, texture-structure-context analysis. Texture includes the motivated choice of words, syntactic structure etc. Structure relates to the arrangement according to context and texture. As for context, it is clarified as cultural context, context of situation and text-based context (刘军平, 2010:349).

1. 1Cultural Context

Cultural context is the set of circumstances or facts that surround a particular event, situation, etc.joining together. In the very beginning of Adidas' advertisement, there has a phrase called "over twenty-eight years ago". It is no doubt to be translated as "28年前", however, in texture analysis, why does the syntactic structure "years...ago" have to be mentioned here? Does the structure have any implication? While the cultural context tells Lincoln's Gettysburg Address as "Four score and seven years ago..." and Martin Luther King's I have a dream as "Five score years ago". Therefore, the advertisement is endowed with a sense of solemn. In fact, cultural context serves the cultural background out of the text. The author is meant to imitate Lincoln's and Martin's writing style. Translators are required to expose that while translating.

In Shakespeare's 7th line of the 125th sonnet, it has "For compound sweet foregoing simple savour". The translated texts are as follows (源引自莎士比亚十四行诗) :

(1) 一味的贪肥甘,不愿尝清淡的味道

(2) 弃清淡入味,只追求浓油赤酱

(3) 为繁重的装潢而舍平淡的精神

Under the Model of Context, the texture must be "compound sweet" and "simple savour". But why the word "sweet" and "savour" have been chosen here and the structure is "....foregoing..." within the context and texture. Without any context analysis, target readers could find the folds while could not understand what is "肥甘" "浓油赤酱" and "繁重的装潢". Since Bible's Leviticus has noted that " As for the oblation of the firstfruits, ye shall offer them unto the Lord: but they shall not be burnt on the altar for a sweet savour", "sweet savour" could be taken for God's key words of Mose's instruction of Israelites about how to offer sacrifices (in Chinese, say, 祭, 素祭和平安祭). After the analysis of cultural context, readers understand that the sonnet of Shakesphere to his dear friend is his oblation, thus getting Shakesphere's idea of borrowing allusions to satirize those brownnosers' loss of devout hearts.

1.2 Context of Situation

Context of situation is the contextual knowledge shared by the original and target readers (Munday, 2010:pp.99-100). Actually, the context of situation is always implied in the source text. The task for a translator is to expose the implied context out the the verbal meaning. Take Shakespeare’s 116th sonnet as an example, the texture could be "marriage" and "impediments" and structure is well connected with marriage oath. Target readers could not understand two sincere hearts could be connected without any impediment, however, western countries' wedding ceremony has well accepted in Chinese readers and pastor's words has already been concluded in target readers' cognitive range which all together is called context of situation and translators are only supposed to use annotation to refine the "ample folds".

1.3 Text-based Context

Text-based context is the parts of a written or spoken statement that precede or follow a specific word or passage; usually influencing its meaning or effect. It is information existed in the text. Text-based context is often seen in literary works. Katherine Mansfield's Bliss, it said "A grey cat, dragging its belly, crept across the lawn, and a black one, its shadow, trailed after". For translators, it is pretty hard to grasp because among many characters, the scene of animals turns out to be abrupt. Even so, if text-based context analysis is followed with the texture of "gray" and "black" cat and the structure" ...trailed after (followed after)", in the end of the stroy, "...with Eddie following, like the black cat following the grey cat" is certainly reappeared which echoes the former expression. The impression of Eddie's stealth and sneak is vividly built up.

5 Conclusion

In the early translation studies, analysis is more relied on text itself. The quality of a translated text is often valued by "clearness and coherence". The booming of linguistics enlightened grammar specifications and syntactic structures, leaving a large amount of intractable questions on translated texts. Early translators were likely to consider translated texts' effects on target cultures when source texts are introduced. Experts made great efforts on the choice of words and sentences. As a result, the verbal correspondence was strictly followed, though it is influenced by "free translation" trend. The study mainly lingered on the vocabulary choice and the phrasal expression. The precise refinement could be "a royal robe", however, target readers felt puzzled when faced with author's expression and even got lost over the target language. "Ample folds" hereafter appeared in succession. With the improvement of target culture, historical emphasis and translator's subjectivity, translation studies has entered into a globalizational flourish. Translation behaviour is no longer deemed as pure language action. Since target readers have been taken as a certain cognitive community, along with the presence of Nida's dynamic equivalence and Newmark's communicative translation, the interpretation of a text has gradually been melt into the network of culture and the discipline turn of context analysis is under the way. From different perspectives, linguistics-oriented translation studies and culture-oriented translation studies interpret respectively on context. Cultural and historical context put forward another point in such an interpretation and the solution to "ample folds". In the 1970s, Hatim and Mason discussed Model of Context in a more scientific way. In view of the comprehensive folds, context is classified as cultural context, context of situation and text-based context. Bottom-up process of texture-structure-context is provided, thus "folds" are reduced correspondingly. In order to realize the best communicative purpose, translators are require to reason out the original works' cognitive context, tracing to the best relevant messages and combing target readers' cognitive context, with the analysis of Model of Context, related contextual expression is therefore carried forward. After the common cognitive context is shared, " a royal robe with ample folds" is purposely reduced.

Culture is the carrier of context and language is the external manifestation of context. If language is compared to people's heart, culture could be the body. The survival of life depends on the cooperation between body and heart. Doctors could by no means only focus on heart (language) without any care of the whole life mechanism (context) when an operation is required ( Derrida, 1985:12). Through context analysis in translated texts interpretation, communication is possible and "folds" could be solved, thus, it is available to get a "smooth royal robe" in translation.

(In the offing the sea and the sky were welded together without a joint, and in the luminous space the tanned sails of the barges drifting up with the tide seemed to stand still in red clusters of canvas sharply peaked, with gleams of varnished sprits.)康拉德对于泰晤士河的描述不仅停留在单纯的景色层面,大量的文字赋予其光辉的人文意义,它曾孕育人类“文明”的功绩,见证了英国灿烂的历史:“有什么样的伟大的人和事,不曾随这条河的退潮,向一个未知的世界的神秘中漂浮而去啊!……人们的梦想,共和国的种子,帝国的萌芽。(What greatness had not floated on the ebb of that river into the mystery of an unknown earth!...The dream of men, the seed of commonwealths, the germs of empires.)然而,在1900年前罗马军团战士们的眼中,大不列颠英国亦如现在维多利亚殖民者眼中的非洲:充满神秘色彩,是作为“他者”而存在的。作者借用小说第一人称内视角马洛(Marlow)之口道出了这样的一条非洲刚果河:“它像一条伸长的巨蛇,头浸在海里,身子一动不动躺在一片广袤的荒野上朝远方逶迤伸展,尾巴隐没在这块土地的深处。”(...resembling an immense snake uncoiled, with its head in the sea, its body at rest curving afar over a vast country, and its tail lost in the depths of the land.)

他们是“一群八字形脚的、满脸灰尘的黑人”,(strings of dusty niggers with splay feet arrived and departed)极尽丑陋和肮脏。在东方主义视角下,“他者”是一群不可理喻,被利用的工具,达到西方“文明教化”的目的。对于那些病弱无力的黑人,作者这样描述道:“甚至不是这个世界上的生灵,只是疾病和饥饿的黑影而已”。(they were nothing earthly now―nothing but black shadows of disease and starvation)总之,非洲人被置于“他者”境地之下,行为古怪:跳跃、跺脚、喊叫;说话怪异:发出咕噜声,像是动物哼叫。这些非人化的“动物”被冠以西方人蓄意的偏见,如同神谕一般难以改变,就连被“驯化”的黑人也只是被白人命令的工具,受伤死亡时竟被马洛迅速扔下海:“水流夺走了他,仿佛他不过是一小把草”。(the current snatched him as though he had been a wisp of grass)极少的几句语言“捉住他们,给我们!”,(Catch 'im. Give 'im to us)“吃掉”,(eat 'im)淋漓尽致地塑造了他们残忍、食人的本性,任何有违道义的行为都会在“他者”的言说中合法化。与此相应,白人以老爷甚至是神的面目出现,作者一直使用“朝圣者”(pilgrim)一词,大家都默认这样一个观点:白人“在他们眼中必然带着超自然生物的特点―我们是带着某种神一般的威力去接近他们的”。(appear to them in the nature of supernatural beings―we approach them with the might of deity)他们洋溢着理性光辉、道德全面、成熟可靠。

(Near the same tree two more bundles of acute angles sat with their legs drawn up. One, with his chin propped on his knees, stared at nothing, in an intolerable and appalling manner: his brother phantom rested its forehead, as if overcome with a great weariness; and all about others were scattered in every pose of contorted collapse, as in some picture of a massacre or a pestilence.)

(He is a prodigy...He is an emissary of pity and science and progress)科兹事英国非洲探险家史坦利爵士(Henry Morton Stanley)的化身,他曾因对英国传教士兼探险家利文斯敦(David Livingstone)的一句“阁下就是利文斯敦博士么”(Dr. Livingstone, I presume?) (Each station should be like a beacon on the road towards better things, a centre for trade of course, but also for humanizing, improving, instructing.) (the effect of the torchlight on the face was sinister)可以认为,科兹是一个游离于道德束缚之外的扭曲的灵魂。他屈从了自己的“象牙”贪欲,利用先进武器征服丛林,假扮天神,骗取崇拜,挑起部落争斗,甚至用枪威胁对自己忠心耿耿的俄国人,他曾经在长达17页的报告中扬言“灭绝一切畜牲”。(exterminate all the brutes)即使在病重之时,他仍命令土著居民朝马洛的汽船开枪,因为他“有许多计划,要得到伟大的东西”。 Horror!)

Robinson, Douglas. Translation and Empire: Postcolonial Theories Explained)

[2]托马斯・艾略特的诗作《空心人》中说道:“人是空心人,头脑里塞满了稻草,人的声音‘完全没有意义,像风吹在干草上’”。(headpiece filled with straw/our dried voices/are quiet and meaningless/as wind in dry grass)暗示指出一个人失去了灵魂,便如同塞满了稻草的空心人,任何声音都没有被表达的必要,他们只能处于“被表征”的境地。

意识形态:康拉德的<黑暗之心>》(Marxism and Ideology: Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness,1987)中指出,《黑暗之心》是关于斗争的故事,是一种生产模式与另一种模式和意识的冲突。(源引自王松林《英美康拉德研究综述》)
